The first in a series of supplementary guidance on particular issues of good research practice and addressing misconduct, UKRIO and the Committee on Publication Ethics have produced this information note to raise awareness of the proper criteria for retractions in academic journals and remind researchers that good practice in research includes reporting concerns about the conduct of research, including its publication and dissemination.

Code of Practice for Research: promoting good practice and preventing misconduct

The Code is an essential reference tool to support researchers and research organisations in the conduct of research of the highest quality. Published in 2009, it has been used or adopted by many research organisations, including over 50 universities,




and endorsed by research funders and other bodies. The Code draws upon UKRIO’s unique experiences and is applicable to all types and disciplines of research.

Recommended Checklist for Researchers

The Checklist is a one-page, non-technical checklist for the key points of good practice in research. Use of the Checklist can assist researchers and organisations in fulfilling the requirements of regulatory, funding and other bodies and ensure that important issues have not been overlooked. The Checklist is included in our Code of Practice for Research but, following requests from the research community, has been made available as a separate PDF.

It can help ensure that important issues are not missed and mistakes avoided. The Procedure has been used or adopted by many research organisations, including over 50 universities, as well as being endorsed by funding bodies such as Research Councils UK.
